7 Things To Tell Your Younger Self
Episode 53
I was going to write about the three things you might wish you had told your younger self but I just couldn’t whittle it down to only three, so here’s seven. Without a time machine you’re not going to be able to go back to tell your younger self these pointers but that doesn’t mean you can’t start from now. You may have younger family members, so why not have a think about the life lessons you wish you knew when you were their age and pass on that knowledge and guidance to them?
I’ve kept it as basic as possible so that hopefully the majority of people may find it useful. Let’s get into it.
1) Save Money & Don’t Waste Money
When I look back at certain times in my life, I cringe at the money I’ve wasted even though I’m certainly not the worst out there. You haven’t always gotten the worth out of the things you’ve bought in the past. Just check your wardrobe, your attic, your spare room, your shed, your kitchen drawers or under your stairs if you don’t believe me.
It’s shocking to think that so many people have very little in the way of an emergency fund. Emergencies are always going to happen in life. Time will go by whether you save or not. If you regularly save a small amount, your future self will be delighted you did. Maybe some people think they won’t value a small amount of savings because they see themselves not needing it in the future. You’ll always make use of small money even if you do come across a windfall of cash. Stop spending on unnecessary shite and save what you can.
2) Read More
This is your constant and lifelong education. You might think you already read enough but you probably don’t. Yes, we’ll include audio books and podcasts too but only non-fiction stuff. Read everything on the subject matter that interests you and that can help you towards your goals. Reading may be an informal education but you have full control over the lessons and the material. Those who learn more, earn more and not just financial earnings. Knowledge = success. More knowledge = more success.
3) Write More
You definitely don’t write enough. Write lists, plans, thoughts, stories, poems, letters, emails, articles, diaries, movie scripts, books, and blogs. The process of writing is very educational and also very therapeutic. There’s a great sense of accomplishment with writing. There can be great nostalgia when reading pieces from your past and your work can also serve as a legacy for future generations. When you’re writing, you transition from being a consumer of material to being a producer of material.
4) Exercise More
A sport or activity is great as you can lose weight, get fit and toned while participating in something that’s also developing your skills. Even though I’ve worked as a personal trainer, I find that gym training can be very hard to sustain over a long period of time because there can be too much of an emphasis on appearance. Training for appearance relies too much on ego as a driver and this decreases as you get older. It’s great if you can benefit from an improved appearance while taking part in an activity that you love and doesn’t feel like a chore. Exercises just for exercising’s sake will always be inferior to the mind-set of an athlete or performer.
I’m not saying don’t go to or enjoy the gym. I am saying to use the gym along with a sport, activity or past time that you enjoy.
5) Meditate
What if there was a way to increase your mental health, your confidence, your feeling of being in control, your problem solving, your emotional balance, your focus, your happiness, your relationships and your connectedness with yourself and the universe. Meditation can be as complicated or as simple as you like. Each person can find their own way to meditate as it can mean something different to each person. Find your own routine and the earlier you start, the sooner you’ll reap the benefits. I feel there are so many misconceptions regarding meditation. Essentially it’s taking a few minutes out to close your eyes, to breathe, to clear and relax your mind and then to direct your thoughts down whichever path you choose, while in an unemotional state. A daily ten minute routine is perfect and you’ll feel better after each session. Simples.
6) Study Nutrition
Understanding your body and the food that fuels you best is an individual and lifelong journey. Each decision at each meal adds up over the years for better or for worse. The sooner you start a healthy relationship with food, the sooner you will ensure your healthiest future self. Nutrition is such a large and changing subject that you should be prepared to study it your whole life.
7) Set Goals
Don’t ever be afraid to think big and to set out exactly what you really want to have or do. Clearly defined goals will help you attract the knowledge and people into your life that you need in order to achieve these goals. The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t achieve something but you’ll be a lot closer to that goal than if you hadn’t tried. The reason this is the last point is because with the correct goals, it actually motivates you to do all of the points above.
What things do you wish you could tell your younger self?

The Art Of Fighting Dirty
Wednesday Jul 10, 2019
Wednesday Jul 10, 2019
Episode 51 :)
Fighting dirty is going beyond the normal fighting ‘etiquette’. It’s certainly not staying within ‘Queensbury Rules’. Fighting dirty doesn’t adhere to any written rules or regulations. It’s employing the exact opposite of what’s allowed in a sporting contest.
While this subject matter is about fighting, it could be a metaphor for fighting for the goals you wish to achieve in life or business.
Fighting dirty can mean different things to different people and can even vary from region to region.
Years ago, I was working as a doorman at an Irish bar in Los Angeles, California. I was the only Irish person working at that bar and on one of the nights when I arrived to start my shift, I noticed that the security staff seemed a bit more apprehensive and nervous than normal. Two of my colleagues were basket ball players. One of them was seven foot tall and the other was six and a half foot and solidly built. They told me their apprehension was due to the fact that an Irish group had booked an event there that night. Of course, I was ready to defend my nationality and asked them why this should be an issue. They then told me that if there were any incidents, the Irish are known to bite and headbutt! I couldn’t argue and actually felt a little bit of pride. Upon further questioning, they told me that they were used to some type of sportsmanship in the street encounters.
When should you fight dirty?
Fighting dirty can have severe consequences. You could badly harm your assailant. You could get into trouble with the law. You could suffer from guilt for a long time afterwards. Suffice it to say, fighting dirty may only be justified in cases of extreme violence and where your very survival is at risk. Your actions could result in both a moral and a legal dilemma for you. If you have any part in escalating a situation, you will find it very hard to justify your actions if they lead to consequences.
Fighting dirty isn’t for heightened arguments with friends, peers or family members. It’s for more extreme situations like being attacked when you weren’t expecting it and when you’re life and well-being are at stake.
Maybe a disclaimer would be perfect right now. I’m not endorsing any action that you may choose to take as a result of reading this blog and I cannot be held responsible for any repercussions.
How do you fight dirty?
If you use striking that would be illegal in a sporting fight and strike the targets that would be illegal in a sporting fight, this would definitely get you on the fighting dirty path. Just because someone has practiced martial arts, this doesn’t necessarily cross over to being proficient at self-defence. It can certainly help but pure self-defence training is a different discipline and mind-set.
Dirty fighting can include head butts, eye gouging, kicking the knees, groin strikes, targeting the throat, various open hand strikes, grabbing hair, fish hooking, joint strikes and even spitting.
Mis-direction, distraction and faking weakness/tiredness/injury can all be used to catch your assailant unaware in order to even up the odds in your favour. Hiding the start of your strike will transition you from being fast to being explosive. Engaging your fast twitch muscle fibres is best when speed is essential.
If that’s not enough violent content for you, you could attempt to gain an advantage by equipping yourself with a weapon. If there are no readily available weapons, use everyday objects at hand. Many items can become improvised lethal weapons.
I do hope that you never have to fight dirty. If confrontation situations are a worry for you or if you would simply like to learn some self-defence in order to build your confidence, please check out your local clubs. Please let me know if you need any advice or support.
