Here's To The Overthinkers - ep75
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
Wednesday Oct 02, 2019
Overthinking can get such bad press. Some reports have overthinking linked to anxiety and depression but it doesn’t have to be that way. The problem with categorising yourself as an over thinker is that life is never black and white. You might also identify as a lateral thinker (thinking outside the box) but you’ll also be able to think vertically (using a logical process) and vice versa. We may have tendencies towards one more than the other but we can still access both thought processes.
Sometimes we overthink and sometimes we under think. I know which one I would rather do more often! The successful people I have studied reside in the overthinking category. In fact, their overthinking IS the very reason for their success in most cases.
Having the ability to be able to thoroughly think things through is a great advantage for any large decision. If you wish to set goals and you want to achieve more, then your ability to analyse and strategize is of utmost importance. Every eventuality should be thought through. In law it’s called due diligence. It is expected that when it comes to business and investing, you’ll do your homework and carry out extensive research.
The main problem with overthinking is the ‘over’ part. Knowing when you have crossed over to the point of it becoming procrastination.
How to Overthink properly
It’s hard to beat a simple pros and cons exercise. Write down the advantages and disadvantages of your decision or the action steps. I still favour pen and paper as it’s easier to perform a mind map (linking imagery, words and thoughts on paper) then it is using digital devices. I find it can be easier to think on paper and to include diagrams and visual aids and then to transfer to digital means. Computer software or phone apps can force more of a vertical thought process. I listened to a very successful writer recently who writes one novel every year and always hand writes everything first.
Before you seek counsel it’s important to know what you want to achieve so that others don’t feel they need to help you to make up your mind. That generally turns out to not be what you wanted. Decide on your goal first and then get advice on how to achieve it as well as all of the potential pitfalls.
Avoid Analysis Paralysis
When you’re overwhelmed, you’re under managed. You simply need help or advice from others. Once you’ve thrashed out a plan and gotten feedback from those close to you, it will be time to make a decision and follow through. Overthinking is an integral part of the decision making process until the point where it turns into analysis paralysis. You’ll need to set a time frame for your decision to be made and try to stick with it.
How to avoid the build-up of anxiety
When thinking starts going around in circles, you become more indecisive and frustrated which can lead to inactivity, loss of confidence and ultimately self-loathing.
You’re decision making process may also involve leaving the subject and then coming back to it at a later stage. You may need to have a good sleep and make a fresh decision in the morning. Meditation may help to give clarity as can a stroll in nature. Have faith in your process. Once you’ve made your decision, try not to revisit it. You’ll need to make peace with the fact that you’ve done everything within your power and time frame to reach your conclusion. Once the decision is made, it’s time to pull the trigger. Put plans into action. If it doesn’t work out for you, analyse what went wrong and make another plan. If it does work out for you, analyse what went right and make another plan.
If you are going to overthink then you may as well overthink about the things that you want to overthink about and not the stuff you don’t. Direct your time and energy to your favoured subjects and hopefully your brain won’t get the chance to gruel over or misread unnecessary thoughts. Focus on your future and leave regret in the past.
My final point would be to surround yourself with people who are understanding and possibly a little forgiving of your thought process. It helps greatly if you have a partner that knows how you think and can help with your decision making process.

You Stupid Idiot
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Did that title give you an emotional response? Hopefully it did or you may not read this! It can mean different things to different people. Read on to become immune to the fear of looking stupid, the fear of what others might think and your own negative self-talk.
The fear of looking stupid
The fear of looking stupid is one of the worst fears to prevent you from pursuing your goals. It’s a dream killer. We all want to be accepted by our peers. Maybe even being looked up to a little bit could be nice for a while. Many people have a stifling fear of being perceived as dumb or stupid. This can prevent you from taking any positive action steps towards your goals and may even prevent you from simply speaking up. To succeed past the point where you are at right now, this is a fear that you’ll have to learn to manage. How do I know this when I don’t know you or where you are at right now? Because to achieve more then you have currently achieved, you will have to attempt more. By attempting more you’ll have a greater risk of something not working out, i.e. potentially looking stupid to others.
From time to time we all make mistakes. It’s impossible to know everything about everything so eventually we could catch ourselves out with an accidental display of our ignorance. Guess what? It’s a human trait to be wrong sometimes, to make mistakes sometimes, to fail sometimes. We are all stupid in regards to certain subjects. Sometimes we attempt to control events beyond our control or sometimes we attempt something that doesn’t work out for us. This is all part of learning and improving.
The fear of looking stupid doesn’t have to be a concern for someone who never attempts anything. That’s always an option. Do less, get hurt less. Play it safe and keep the head down. Attempt to go unnoticed. Risk nothing. Stay in the comfort zone. However, regret could hit you like a truck sooner or later. You could end up becoming one of the could of, would of and should of brigade.
If you feel you need to have a fear, transfer your fear of looking stupid into a fear of regret. You’re fear of regret will drive you on to do things that your fear of failure would normally prevent you from doing. Life is for living and the full range of results that entails.
Don’t pay too much attention to the opinion of others
Why do you hold the opinion of others in such high esteem? Especially those that you may not like, may not respect or have even met. Can you see how ridiculous it is to base your important life decisions on what you think other people may think? If you attempt something and friends judge you harshly, were they even real friends to begin with? You’ll have done yourself a favour by filtering them out of your life sooner rather than later. Real friends will always be supportive, provide feedback and be accepting of your goals. To live your own life free of the fear of what others might say or think is to live a life of relative free will. You will have a much stronger sense of control over your own life if you follow your own heart and mind when making your plans. Meaningless people should mean less in your life.
Reduce your negative self-talk
Maybe you are calling yourself a stupid idiot. I’m all for self-deprecating humour and being able to laugh at our own quirks. However, negative self-talk can be very damaging. Don’t let yourself away with tearing yourself down. Most people can be a lot harder on themselves than anyone else could ever be. You must live with yourself 24/7 so you may as well reduce the negative things you tell yourself. I’m not saying to substitute with false confidence. Focus more on genuine positivity instead of imagined negativity. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot before you even get started with a goal or plan.
By the way, you’re definitely not a stupid idiot because you’ve read to the end. If you were to do something stupid from time to time then that’s okay too, just don’t make the foolish mistake of forgetting to share, like and review this blog :)

STOP! Lashing Out In Anger
Wednesday Sep 18, 2019
Wednesday Sep 18, 2019
EPISODE 71
There’s a two-fold meaning to this week’s blog. Let’s deal with the physical first. This is a situation I’ve recently experienced (which led to this blog post) and one that I’ve experienced many times over the past 20 years+ coaching martial arts. A student comes in to train but they have a hand injury so they cannot hit the punch bag or focus mitts. Nothing unusual there I hear you say, but sometimes it’s easy to figure out that it isn’t a training injury. Something has bubbled up their anger to the point of them lashing out and striking a hard object. This type of a reaction in an emotional situation can have severe consequences, especially if lasting damage is done to the limb or if it escalates to further self harm or even lashing out at another person.
This isn’t a judgemental piece even though it is stupid behaviour. I’ve lashed out in anger in the past and I was never proud of letting that emotion come over me. Martial arts attempts to teach you to be in control of your emotions. This may seem strange to you, especially if you imagine competitive fighting as a form of violence, but I can safely say that I never felt any anger towards my opponent during my professional MMA fights. Anger when fighting is an inefficient driver with too many negative consequences.
The primary stereotype is that younger men are more prone to this behaviour but do not think for a second that women or older men cannot and do not lash out in anger.
An uncontrolled display of anger isn’t cool. It’s not a display of dominance. Anger doesn’t reach the best conclusion in any situation.
Now the non-physical lashing out in anger:
Verbally lashing out in anger is an example of compounding or escalating an already bad situation. Am I advising not defending yourself? Absolutely not. I’m advising not to respond with uncontrolled anger which could make the situation worse for all concerned. If you’re someone that experiences guilt, uncontrolled outbursts will always lead you there.
Taking any type of immediate action in a highly charged and emotional state is ill advised.
While I’m not advocating revenge, don’t forget about the famous expression. “Revenge is a dish best served cold”. Even for revenge purposes it’s not a good idea to react in anger.
Okay, so what do you do when you feel your anger is rising?
- The most powerful thing you can do is to remove yourself from the situation before you over heat. Simply walking away is nearly always an option. Life experience does make it easier to avoid the people and situations that could trigger you. The wiser you become, the easier it is to anticipate certain events.
- Concentrating on your breathing and attempting to slow things down in your mind can also help.
- If it’s possible to use words to escalate situations then it’s also possible to use words to de-escalate them. Perhaps you could use a few extra pre-anger verbal de-escalators. That’s home work for you. Ask someone who you know is good at positively dealing with confrontation. Somebody you look up to. Ask them what they would do or what they would say in each given scenario. A wealth of knowledge could be learnt from others with experience.
- Obviously I’m going to advocate hitting the punch bag as the ultimate way to help level out the emotions and to reduce stress. All sports and exercise can help to reduce a build-up of energy and frustration.
Despite the complex chemical response that takes place in our bodies due to adrenaline and despite our egos, we do have more control over our emotions than we may think.
We’re not trying to eliminate emotion from our lives but we are attempting to manage uncontrolled aggression that can end up hurting more than just a knuckle.
